One crude measure of the power and reach of the growing U.S. Hispanic marketplace is that five years ago seven of the dozen Spanish and bilingual TV networks mounting upfront presentations this month didn't even exist. Today, industry leaders Univision and Telemundo are sharing a widening marketplace with networks big and small. Here's what the Hispanic networks say they have in store for 2008-2009.

To a marketer, U.S. Hispanics aren't just attractive because they are expanding as a population. Hispanics in the U.S. are quite sophisticated mobile phone users and in many technology categories they are ahead of the curve in mobile computing. Part of this boils down to demographics: 51.5 percent of Hispanics with mobile phones are between 18-34 years old while 31 percent of the general population falls within that range. Isaac Mizrahi, Sprint's multicultural marketing director, says there's also a cultural component.
