SBS, ABC Radio Networks Reach Syndication Deal
November 10, 2004
By Katy Bachman

Through a deal with Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), ABC Radio Networks announced Wednesday a five-year exclusive deal to nationally syndicate three SBS morning shows, including Los Angeles morning show El Cucuy de la Mañana; hosted by Renán Almendárez Coello, the most popular personality in Hispanic radio.

In addition to Coello's show, which is broadcast out of KLAX-FM, ABC will syndicate El Vacilón de la Mañana hosted by Luis Jimenez and Moonshadow and originating from WSKQ-FM in New York, as well as El Vacilón de la Mañana hosted by Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero broadcast from WXDJ-FM in Miami. All three radio programs are the top-rated morning shows among Hispanics in their markets as well as the number one or number two-ranked morning show in the market, regardless of language.

As part of the deal, ABC will have the exclusive rights to sell on-air advertising on the three stations, as well as WLEY-FM in Chicago and KRZZ-FM, SBS' new station that is set to launch in San Francisco at the end of the month.

"Over the past few years we have seen explosive growth in the market for Hispanic radio and look forward to reaching an even broader audience through this relationship with ABC," said Raul Alarcón, chairman, president and CEO of SBS.

The timing of the deal between the two companies couldn't be better. While the Hispanic market may be booming, there is a shortage of syndicated Hispanic programming. ABC and SBS now can offer syndicated Hispanic programming to groups wishing to expand into Hispanic radio, such as Clear Channel, which, in September said it would convert up to 25 of its stations to Spanish-language formats during the next two years, giving it 43 Hispanic radio stations in total.

For SBS, the agreement with ABC is its second major strategic partnership. Last month, SBS partnered with Viacom's Infinity Broadcasting, giving Viacom a 10 percent equity stake in SBS in exchange for cross-promotion and a new radio station in San Francisco. SBS also has a promotional and sales alliance with NBC's Telemundo.
