November 02, 2005
Univision today announced that it has taken in a record $180 million in advertiser commitments for the 2006 FIFA World Cup telecasts which begin airing next summer, with additional inventory left to sell.
And, as reported in Mediaweek earlier this week, Univision officially announced that it has won the U.S. Hispanic television rights to air the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament for $325 million. The rights also include several other FIFA soccer events, including the FIFA Women's WOrld Cups in 2007 and 2011 and the FIFA Conderations Cups in 2009 and 2013, as well as 22 smaller tournaments.
The 2002 World Cup telecasts on Univision attracted 35 million viewers, and more than 50 million are expected for the 2006 World Cup telecasts on the network.
Univision beat out rival U.S. Hispanic network Telemundo for the 2010 and 2014 TV rights. FIFA president Joseph Blatter said, "Univision came to us with a comprehensive package that will not only guarantee coverage of the FIFA World Cup and all other FIFA tournaments, but also promote football [soccer] and the FIFA brand even at those times when no tournaments are taking placec. We have ensured that images of our events will be seen by the widest possible audience across the U.S."
Univision Networks, which also include sister broadcast network TeleFutura and cable network Galavision, will televise all 64 matches of the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Univision has televised every World Cup tournament since 1978.
