Univision To Air World Cup Final Draw Friday
December 08, 2005
By Moses Frenck

The Univision Television Network on Friday will broadcast the highly anticipated 2006 World Cup Final Draw to determine which teams will face off in the first round of one of the world's most-popular sporting events.

The Final Draw, or Sorteo in Spanish, will be broadcast live around the world from Leipzig, Germany. Univision will air the Sorteo in the United States beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET.

After 847 games involving 194 teams, 32 national teams will be drawn into groups for the first round of play to determine the first 48 games of the tournament, which begins in June.

The Sorteo will be hosted by Primer Impacto anchors Fernando del Rincón and Bárbara Bermudo and will feature República Deportiva host Fernando Fiore reporting from Leipzig and sports anchors Pablo Ramírez and Jesús Bracamontes providing commentary from Miami. Colombian rocker and avid soccer fan Juanes will perform from Germany.

According to Univision, telelvision sponsorship for the Sorteo was sold as part of the larger World Cup package. Sponsors include General Motors, Hyundai, Miller Brewing, Budweiser, Allstate, State Farm, Nike, Verizon and T-mobile.

The 2002 World Cup from Korea and Japan was seen by more than 35 million viewers in the United States alone on Univision and its sister networks TeleFutura and Galavisión, despite the fact that most games were broadcast live in the middle of the night.

The 2006 tournament in Germany will air live during the day on Univision and TeleFutura with the "Game of the Day" rebroadcast on Galavisión during prime time, according to the network.
