AMI Shutters Three Titles, Including 'Shape en Español'
April 04, 2006
By Stephanie D. Smith, Mediaweek
American Media Inc. Chairman David Pecker orchestrated a number of sweeping changes that left three of the publisher's magazines shuttered and another moving back to its headquarters.
The company announced it will immediately fold the year-old fashion and Hollywood lifestyle magazine Celebrity Living, Shape en Español and automotive title MPH. AMI also will move National Enquirer back to its home in Boca Raton, Fla., with one of its former editors at the helm.
Shape en Español and MPH, which launched last September, will close its doors. Both respective editors will be leaving the company. In January, Latino Group publisher Yolanda Jordana resigned unexpectedly. She had overseen both Shape en Español and ¡Mira! magazine!
The changes come after Pecker spent weeks evaluating his business. He has been under increasing shareholder pressure to figure out the most effective way to boost profitability.
The announcement follows on the heels of AMI's decision on March 23 not to increase Celebrity Living's newsstand pockets due to disappointing sales. While the magazine met its rate base of 225,000, single-copy sales were far below the million or more copies that rival celebrity weeklies Wenner Media's Us Weekly, Time Inc.'s People and Bauer Publishing's In Touch each sell on newsstand.
Celebrity Living is the second star-struck title to fold. In November, Gemstar-TV Guide shut down Inside TV.
