By MyM Staff
The powerful family of Carlos Slim Helú, Mexico's richest man, has bought a $288 million, or approximately 2.8 percent, stake in Univision Communications Inc., reported the Mexican press.
According to a report by Mexico City-based El Universal Online, Slim's son, Carlos Slim Domit, completed the stopck purchase through Inmobiliaria Carso SA, a holdling company based in Mexico.
Citing a Televisa SEC filing, the article states that Slim Domit purchased 8.5 million U.S.-traded shares at an average $33.83 a share from March 9 through March 20.
His father and business partner, Carlos Slim Helú, was listed by Forbes magazine as the world's third-richest person, with $30 billion.
Slim senior also sits on the board of Grupo Televisa.
Grupo Televisa, which owns 11.4 percent of Univision's class A stock, said in a filing yesterday that it is evaluating "alternatives" with respect to Univision, and specifically said that it is not acting in partnership with the Slim family.
Shares of Televisa in the U.S. were up 1 percent Thursday morning at $20.94. Univision shares were up 1.6 percent at $35.07.
