Clear Channel Launches Regional Mexican Station in Atlanta
November 28, 2006
By MyM Staff

Atlanta-based WBZY-FM on Tuesday became the first full-market regional Mexican station with the launch of El Patrón 105.3 FM, Clear Channel Radio announced today. The new station will be commercial free until Dec. 4 and will feature music from core artists including Los Tigres del Norte, Grupo Montez de Durango, Intocable, Alegres de la Sierra, Banda El Recodo, Beto y Sus Canarios and Vicente Fernández.

"Spanish radio is the fastest-growing format in our industry," said Chuck Deskins, market manager for Clear Channel Atlanta, in a statement. "This puts us in a better position to offer more choices to our valued listeners and advertisers."

WBZY-FM's flip to Spanish-language music is part of Clear Channel's Spanish-language programming initiative announced in 2004 and led by Alfredo Alonso, svp of Hispanic radio. The initiative has resulted in the introduction of Spanish-language radio formats on Clear Channel radio stations in 28 markets.

Clear Channel, owner of the nation's largest radio group, earlier this month announced it will be sold to a team of private equity firms in a deal valued at $26.7 billion — if shareholders are willing and a better deal doesn't come along before Dec. 7. Concurrent with the deal, CC announced it will divest its 42 TV stations and 448 of its 1,150 radio stations, focusing on the top 100 markets. The assets for sale account for less than 10 percent of the company's revenue.
