New York-Area Poblanos Get Direct Flight Home
December 08, 2006
By Laura Martínez
The New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state area is home to more than 1 million citizens of the Mexican state of Puebla. So it was just a matter of time before Aeromexico, Mexico’s largest airline, inaugurated a direct flight from the Big Apple to Puebla, a city about 60 miles east of Mexico City.
Starting Dec.8 Aeromexico will operate three weekly flights direct from New York JFK Airport, to Puebla’s tiny international airport, PBS. The route will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from the U.S. with return flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Aeromexico executives say they hope to convert the flight to daily by mid-2007. Marketing is already underway with media buys in local newspapers, radio and television.
Aeromexico acknowledges to have lost some Mexican travelers from the New Jersey area, who were more likely to take a flight to Mexico from Newark instead of traveling to JFK – at least a 90-minute drive. For this reason, the company’s new JFK flight will include free shuttle service (AeroBus) between Passaic and Union City in New Jersey to JFK.
The airline says it expects the flights to be 70 percent full, or approximately 800 passengers per week. Roundtrip fares to Puebla will average $300.
Puebla, which has a population of 5.1 million, is one of the Mexico’s largest exporters of migrant workers. In fact, Aeromexico also is inaugurating a thrice-weekly direct flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Puebla, and plans are underway to do so from Chicago as well.
Though the Puebla-bound flight will depart at midnight, arriving early in the morning in Mexico, Aeromexico promises one thing most airlines have long ago discarded: a unique gourmet dining menu offering the delicacies of the world-famous Poblano food, which includes the typical mole and other spicy delicacies.
