Miss Universe Crowns Telemundo Sunday Time Slot Winner

NEW YORK Sunday night's broadcast of "Miss Universo 2008" was the most watched Spanish-language program in the time period among key adult and female demos, per the Nielsen Television Index (NTI).

The live broadcast from Nha Trang, Vietnam pulled in 2.02 million total viewers, grabbing a 46 percent share among Spanish-language networks; more than 1 million adults 18 to 49 for a 42 percent share in Spanish TV; 625,000 women ages, 18 to 49; and 307,000 women 18 to 34, outpacing Hispanic TV networks and the CW across the key demos as well as CBS in the adult 18 to 34 and male 18 to 34 categories, per Nielsen.

Among adults 18 to 49 in major U.S. Hispanic markets, the Telemundo broadcast won the time period, edging out other Spanish-language stations in New York, Houston, Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco, per the Nielsen Station Index (NSI).


"Miss Universo 2008" was the most watched program in English and Spanish among local households in Miami, per NSI.

Hosted by Telemundo personalities Candela Ferro and Poncho de Anda, the pageant was telecast nationally in Spanish simultaneously with the NBC live broadcast to 170 countries hosted by talk show host Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown.

Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza, was crowned Miss Universe 2008 in an event marked by the spectacle of Miss USA, Crystle Stewart, falling down during the evening gown competition, the second straight year a U.S. contestant has taken a tumble during the contest.
