L.A. Radio's El Cucuy Says Adios

NEW YORK One of Hispanic radio's biggest personalities, El Cucuy, Renán Almendárez Coello, has signed off of KLAX-FM "La Raza" in Los Angeles, dealing a blow to owner Spanish Broadcasting System.
After five years with SBS, El Cucuy announced Monday (Sept. 15) that he will focus on building his own radio network (he co-owns a radio station in New Mexico) and continue to work on his TV show, "AzAzte pa' ca" for Azteca América, which debuted earlier this year.
To replace El Cucuy on KLAZ, SBS announced it would import its morning show "El Chulo de la Mañana" from WLEY-FM, Chicago beginning today (Sept. 16). The show is hosted by Joaquín "El Chulo" Garza and features his sidekick Raul Bernal, whose on air characters include Doña Mela and Denise Garcia.
"El Chulo de la Mañana" will air weekdays from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on both SBS-owned stations.
"Garza's show has been a great success in numerous radio markets, and we are confident that Los Angeles will love 'El Chulo de la Manana' and connect with the unique style of Garza," said Marko Radlovic, chief operating officer for SBS.
