Hispanic Media Mounts Voter Registration Push
September 22, 2008
By Della de Lafuente
NEW YORK Hispanic elected officials and the executives of major U.S. Hispanic media companies again are joining forces in a public awareness partnership targeting 1 million prospective Latino voters in seven states.
The "Ya es hora, ve y vota" ("It's time, go vote") campaign is expected to go into overdrive later this week when leaders of the voter registration effort unveil plans to distribute nearly 1 million voter registration cards in seven states. A telephone call with reporters is scheduled for Thursday (Sept. 25) at noon, Eastern time, the group announced today (Sept. 22).
The voter drive, which is believed to be the largest Latino voter project in the nation, is being mounted with the goal of dramatically increasing the number of Latinos who participate in the 2008 general election in November.
Entravision and Univision will promote the voter registration push via TV and radio with ImpreMedia providing support via the Web and its roster of print publications nationwide.
The effort is one of several high-profile voter participation projects currently underway targeting prospective Hispanic voters, including the initiative, "Vota Por Tu Futuro" ("Vote for Your Future") launched earlier this month by Telemundo and sister network mun2.
The "Ya es hora" project is the force behind the successful campaign in 2006 to galvanize 1.4 million legal permanent residents to apply for citizenship.
Media, corporate and elected leaders spearheading the project include:
• Marcelo Gaete, vp, public and government affairs, Entravision Communications Corp.;
• Monica Lozano, svp, newspapers, ImpreMedia;
• Ben Monterroso, executive director, Mi Familia Vota Education Fund;
• Arturo Vargas, executive director, NALEO Educational Fund
• Clarissa Martinez, director of immigration and national campaigns, National Council of La Raza;
• Mike Fernandez, vp of public affairs, State Farm; and
• Cesar Conde, executive vp, chief strategy officer, Univision Communications Inc.
