V-me, Public Radio Offer 'Select a Candidate' in Spanish
September 23, 2008
By Della de Lafuente

NEW YORK V-me has partnered with American Public Media, owner and operator of public radio stations, to create an online election survey tool in Spanish that lets users determine which 2008 presidential candidate is most closely aligned with their views.

Dubbed "Select a Candidate," the online survey function puts Latino voters through a series of questions about major campaign issues, providing a quick overview of the candidates, Democratic hopeful Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

The survey tool also provides details on the candidates' positions on issues important to Hispanic voters, offering a comparative look of the candidates' views versus those of survey participants.

Some 700,000 users have gone online to sample the English version of "Select a Candidate" since its launch in 2007, per V-me.

"By many indications, Latino voters will be a major force in this year's election," said Sarah Lutman, American Public Media's svp of content and media, in a statement. "We hope 'Select a Candidate' will be a useful tool to help these voters make informed decisions."

A free HTML code is available for users who want to put the "Select a Candidate" widget on a Web site. For more info, go to AmericanPublicMedia.PublicRadio.org/engage08/selectacandidate/widget/.

The launch of "Select a Candidate" comes just ahead of the presidential election in November and the upcoming presidential debate on Friday (Sept. 26).

V-me will broadcast "Participa 2008: Presidential Debate and Interactive Forum," a three-hour live telecast beginning at 9 p.m., Eastern, moderated by Jim Lehrer of PBS.

The televised event will feature a live Spanish simulcast of the first 2008 presidential debate between candidates Obama and McCain from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss.

Following the debate, V-me will air an interactive forum in Spanish with a live studio audience from New York, hosted by anchor Jorge Gestoso. Viewers will be able to participate in the forum via emails, SMS text and online, per a press statement.
