September 30, 2008
By Della de Lafuente
NEW YORK ESPNDeportes.com is just a click away on a handheld device for Hispanic sports aficionados with mobile Internet access via the wireless offering, ESPN Mobile Web, the sports portal announced today.
Mobile users can access the latest sports news, games scores and statistics in Spanish from ESPNDeportes.com starting this week. Access to the sports portal is free to users with mobile Internet access.
Making Spanish-language sports content available via its mobile offering is a way for ESPN Deportes to extend a new service to its TV and Web audiences, acknowledging the U.S. Hispanic market's vast mobility and high degree of content consumption via mobile phones.
"We believe adding ESPN Deportes content [to ESPN Mobile Web] enhances our overall offering for a new audience," said Oke Okaro, vp, mobile product development and international digital media, in a statement. "Now U.S. Hispanic fans will have access to their favorite sports news and information right in the palm of their hand."
ESPNDeportes.com's mobile Web site features soccer, including:
• Coverage of top clubs such as Primera División de México, Argentina, Futebol Brasileiro, English Premier League, Spanish La Liga and Major League Soccer, among others;
• News and sports from top professional U.S. sports leagues such as Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association and the National Football League, as well as other pro sports including boxing, tennis, golf and motor sports;
• Breaking news and analysis, live scores, schedules, standings and ESPN Deportes TV listings;
• Features such as "Player Search," for info on Hispanic and Latin American stars and customization tools for designating team favorites from among top pro sports leagues and receiving info on the latest news and score; and
• Unique ESPN Deportes experience and optimization for all major smartphones and feature phones, per the Web portal.
Other functions are expected to be added in the future to the mobile Web site, including increased coverage of rugby, Latin American baseball and global basketball; special coverage sections for events; fantasy games; Spanish-language breaking news and team alerts will also be added, per ESPN Mobile Web.
ESPN Mobile Web is regularly one of the top 10 most-trafficked sports content wireless sites, per industry sources.
