EDITOR'S NOTE: Open Letter to Jerry Perenchio
December 01, 2005
WHAT TOOK YOU so long? As I was getting ready to send this issue to the printer, I learned that the network that you have kept so tightlipped for over a decade, has finally opened up to the press by giving a reporter from Fortune unprecedented access to America's largest Spanish-language network.
An upcoming article on Univision Communications, I am told, features exclusive interviews with you and offers a rare access to some of your top lieutenants, those same people you have managed to keep away from the press for so long.
This change of heart is important because covering Hispanic media and marketing without having access to you or your executives is not an easy task, or as one of my reporters put it recently, a "positively Orwellian" experience.
You might not care to hear this but I cannot tell you how frustrating it is for us, when trying to speak to a Univision executive, we are offered the "talent" instead. Sure, it's fun to talk to Rubí or El Chavo himself, but hey, we'd also love to hear from Ray and Alina.
I really hope that your decision to open up is a first step toward a better relationship with those of us whose business it is to cover yours. There's nothing wrong with hoping, and this, Mr. Perenchio, is my wish for the Año Nuevo.
Yours truly,
(signed) Laura Martínez Ruiz-Velasco
